Margaret Clapperton

I trained at the College of Art and Industrial Design, Newcastle on Tyne, where I obtained The Intermediate Examination in Art and Crafts and The National Diploma in Design (N.D.D.) in Commercial Design (Special). This was followed by The Art Teacher’s Diploma (A.T.D.) of the Institute of Education, Southampton University.

I had a career teaching Art in both state and private Secondary Schools. Since then I have worked extensively in Adult Education, teaching General Art and Calligraphy. I was also a tutor for the Open College of the Arts. Now I work on a freelance basis for Art Societies and private Art Classes.

Initially using wood engraving and lino cutting, my current printmaking uses intaglio techniques, particularly collagraph and dry point.

I paint mainly in acrylics, mixed media, watercolour, pen and ink, and gouache. My work is both representational and semi-abstract, often utilising my training in graphics. The subjects that mostly inspire me are structural forms. I love working from buildings of all sorts, railway stations, boats, plants and even something as simple as a fence.

I have exhibited work in many local exhibitions, including the 2012 Open Exhibition at the Mercer Gallery, Harrogate, and at RHS Harlow Carr Summer Exhibition, as well as opening my studio for the NiddArt Trail. I am currently Chairman of Pateley Bridge Art Club.
